Background[]

"Cantarella" is an original song by Kurousa-P.

The song's lyrics implies the story of an obsessive and intoxicating romance. A man (KAITO) who tries to keep his love for a girl (Miku) hidden and approach the girl in order to make her his. Taking time by the forelock, he gets closer to her, and he finally reveals himself. Here, KAITO and Miku personify Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia respectively, known for their suggested incestuous relationship and use of a poison named Cantarella.

This song was later rearranged as "Cantarella ~grace edition~", which was made in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of the original song. It was first used as a short demo for KAITO V3 Soft VB; a full version was later released along with a new MV on March 2, 2013. This new MV depicts what appears to be a war between opposite adversaries (symbolized by a round table of three-man chess); the two protagonists (portrayed by KAITO and Miku) are the leading figures of their own respective sides. The poison, "Cantarella", now takes the form of the chess pieces, may be a figurative representation of "power" - their titles.

The revised version of the original song has entered the Hall of Legend, whereas the ~grace edition~ has entered the Hall of Fame.

Our gazes meet,
Inside this closed-off world

You may pretend not to notice but we're drunk on love

This burning heart, I hide it as I draw closer
To feel your sigh would enrapture me

Set a trap now in your ordinary love
Leaving no footprints around the cracks in your defenses

You thought you could see through my words but you got careless

You thought you could drink this powerful potion you knew so well

There's no point running from rusted chains
The more you fight the ticking hand of time

If we slipped into a deep thicket
The scent of our binding sweat would surely overwhelm us

Set a trap now in your ordinary love
If I find the smallest crack,

I'll catch you

If we slipped into a deep thicket
The scent of our binding sweat would surely overwhelm us

Description
Due to the similarities, certain key parts in the story, and other peculiar points of symbolism: this PV is most likely an allusion to the Borgia family legend-the notorious family who was said to have invented the titular poison. KAITO and Miku, play a twisted brother and sister in a story of hidden agendas, bloody murder, romantic passion and forbidden desires; all of which...eventually come to haunt them in the end. However; the end of the PV implies that the tragedy ends on a bittersweet note. [citation needed]

Trivia[]

  • Cantarella is a poison or narcotic said to have been used by the Borgia family as their favorite poison in political assassinations. There are many rumors about its nature, preparation and real effects.
  • In one of his blog posts, Kurousa-P commented that when Crypton Future Media asked him to create a demo song for KAITO V3, he had contemplated between "Cantarella", "Ren'ai Philosophia", and "Risky Game", but eventually settled for the first song. It took him a significantly long time to finish the vocal tuning, having spent around 40 hours to test out the voicebanks.[5]
  • From the MV of "Cantarella ~grace edition~":
    • The cross motif is based on the Borgia family, known for the use of the poison Cantarella.
    • The masks of the two leading characters are based on masquerade masks. In her pixiv entry, Ittomaru commented how the male lead would wear his masks when hiding his true intentions.
    • The six characters which appear in the MV are the six characters of Crypton Future Media, each is represented by a Chess piece. The MV depicts a game of three-man chess, with two characters standing for each side:
      • The Black side:
        • KAITO: the King
        • Len: the Knight
      • The White side:
        • Miku: the Queen
        • Rin: the Rook
      • The Red side:
    • In the Language of flowers, white roses (which represent the female lead) are commonly associated purity and innocence. Blue roses (represent the male lead), given its non-existent nature, are often used to symbolize the mysterious and longing to attain the impossible. The blue roses can also be a synonym for an impossible or unrequited love.
    • The side-by-side full moon and waxing crescent is a recurring theme throughout the song. This detail is also portrayed in the "Cantarella ~grace edition~" in the Project DIVA series.
  • The names of the modules in Hatsune Miku -Project DIVA- F 2nd can be translated as follows:
    • Rosa Blue: Blue Rose
    • Rosa Luno: Moon Rose
    • Rosa Bianca: White Rose
    • Rosa Notte: Night Rose
  • When the word Rosa is removed, the name of the modules' can be read as Blue Luno (Blue Moon) and Notte Bianca (White Night).[6]This detail is reflected in one scene in the ~grace edition~ MV, where the colors of the white moon in a blue night is inverted, creating the imagery of a blue moon in a white night.
