Background[]
“A song about a fighting boy.”
—Author's comment
"Kotonoha Karma" is the first song in Kotonoha Project, and the first half of what's considered "Chapter 1" in the song series. The first Chapter covers a supernatural incident that occurs with classmates Tsukasa Kuzunoha and Ritsu Kanokawa.
Tsukasa plays the part of an aloof and unamused high school student, while the rigid and strict Kanokawa is constantly trying to rein him in as part of the Disciplinary Committee. One day, they are both marked tardy for coming to school late. When Tsukasa ignores going in line, Kanokawa tries to get him to follow the rules, and accidentally takes his headphones off. Even though she apologizes, she doesn't excuse his previous school transgressions.
Her words help formulate a "Tatemae", a monster formed from certain abstract concepts, which then proceeds to injure them both and their fellow classmates. Tsukasa attempts to defeat it, but is only able to do so when Kanokawa calls for help. As she does so, she unlocks her "Honne", a familiar formed from the true feelings of people that is able to fight Tatemae, and it assists Tsukasa in taking the Tatemae down.
The song is featured on the album Seisou Bakuretsu Boy, and the album Kotonoha Karma -Kotonoha Project ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK- Chapter 1. It has a sequel song, "Itazura", which acts as the second half of "Chapter 1"; however, Itazura only has a human version.
It is featured in the Hall of Fame.
