ブラック★ロックシューター (Black★Rock Shooter) (or simply abbreviated as BRS) is a character 15 year old girl who attaches a cannon on her left arm, and the cannon shoots 20 rock bullets per second. She was conceptualized by HUKE, a Japanese illustrator who is best known for creating original characters, drawing Gears of War fanart and also producer work for Metal Gear Solid and the visual novel Steins;Gate. The Black★Rock Shooter character was the inspiration for Supercell's lead member ryo, who wanted to use huke's design to create a song and music video. Eventually this collaboration led to many opportunities for both parties, as the universe of Black★Rock Shooter eventually became an OVA and spawned many merchandise releases.[1]

Although her appearance is similar to Miku, BRS is not a variant or derivative of Miku and only became associated with Vocaloid due to the popularity of the song. Crypton has announced that BRS has no relation with the Vocaloid character, and it once requested that users should not post the illustrations of BRS on Piapro.[2]
A Vocaloid song creator ryo was inspired by BRS and composed a song using Miku Hatsune, while huke created the movie for ryo. The video was a hit on Nico Nico Douga and YouTube, and this eventually led to the worldwide popularity of Black★Rock Shooter. Thus the order of creation was the character of BRS, then the song, then video, followed by the OVA.
On July 24, 2010, the OVA adaptation of Black★Rock Shooter was made.

On July 30, 2010, Crypton announced that the author officially permitted to post fan-art/fan-fictions using Black★Rock Shooter on Piapro.[3]
On March 7, 2011, ぷちっとロックシューター (Puchitto Rock Shooter), a chibi, free-to-play, web-based Game, was released for NicoNicoDouga Users.
On August 25, 2011, an RPG game of the same name was made. It has no relations to the OVA's plot, and is another mere depiction of BRS storyline. The game follows the story of the eponymous character as she awakens from slumber in the year 2052 after an alien invasion had annihilated humanity in two decades ago. The BRS Game Website is updated with official information on the title's development. An international release is imminent.
In January 2012, an anime series aired in Noitamina's timeslot.[4] It had 8 episodes, and is a revamp of the original OVA.
There were also manga releases, but they are mere adaptations based from the characters of huke. One was a chibi 4-Koma called Black★Rock-chan found in Nano Ace. The other is Black★Rock Shooter ~Innocent Soul~ found in Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace. Neither uses the plot of the OVA, but use the characters and make a stand-alone storyline.

- A note in regard to her fake plush dolls, they usually are based on Miku's twintails cut instead of Black★Rock Shooter's asymmetrical ponytails. This makes fake plush dolls of the character quite easy to spot.
