CYBER SONGMAN VOCALOID4 VOCALOID5 | Songs Albums Notable Originals

This article is about the VOCALOID4 software known as a voicebank. If you are looking for the VOCALOID character then click here.

History[]

The earliest known information related to CYBER SONGMAN dates back to the VY2 release in 2010. In an article, a pair of English VY vocals were announced for future development. At the time, the developers did not know if they would re-use past samples or make a new vocal entirely.[1] CYBER DIVA was released in February 2015 and was later confirmed to be the female from the pair and is also known as "VY3".[2] CYBER SONGMAN is likely to be the male of the pair or "VY4".

According to a tweet on October 23, 2016, "CYBER SONGMAN" was registered for copyright by YAMAHA on October 3.[3][4]

On October 31, CYBER SONGMAN was suddenly revealed and released as a download. He was introduced as a natural American English accented VOCALOID and debuted with two demo songs. He also received his own promotional video and a video that briefly discusses his development. He can be purchased on his own or as a starter pack with the VOCALOID4 editor or the VOCALOID4 editor for Cubase. In addition, he was offered in another set: a starter pack containing his vocal and CYBER DIVA along with either the VOCALOID4 editor or VOCALOID4 editor for Cubase.

According to the developer interview, after the success in making a clear English voicebank with CYBER DIVA, they wanted to increase the naturalness of the pronunciation.

Package details as noted:

CYBER SONGMAN is geared towards professional producers. His voice has an American accent. He has only one voicebank, therefore, he cannot use XSY. He is designed for a variety of genres. As a vocal within the VY series of VOCALOIDs, CYBER SONGMAN is intended to be a product that sets a standard for all other English vocals to follow, being of high and professional quality.

His counterpart is CYBER DIVA, CYBER SONGMAN is an improvement still over her voicebank.

Vocal traits as noted:
  • According to the developers, he was created to provide both a clear English pronunciation and an expressive, natural sound. He sounds natural in voice no matter what range he uses.
  • Because of the improvements, CYBER SONGMAN sounds more like he is singing, which was an issue with CYBER DIVA. In his review, D Smokin noted that of the two of them Songman is the more capable to act as a lead singer of a song, though both lack the expression still of an actual human singer. He generally is much more natural then Diva overall.[5]
  • Flexible voice
  • Clear low tone, smooth middle-pitched tone, and bright high tone
  • Made to be able to sing any genre of music.[5]D Smokin, however, noted he and Div were more suited for Rock/Pop then genres such as metal or opera.
  • D Smolken felt he and Diva were more suited for professional musicians then Vocaloid fans.[5]
  • D Smoken described his voice as Smooth and warm, though he is not as high pitched as modern chart singers.[5]
  • CYBER SONGMAN is the first masculine vocals since BIG AL to produce satisfactory low masculine tones in English.
  • Cyber Songman handles GWL generally better then Diva, though is not able to recreate rougher real singers such as Louis Armstrong or Axl Rose. It does allow him to recreate a rough rock or blues voice.[5]
  • At the upper ranges his voice sounds thin and nasally, though below his range sounds fairly decent.[5]
Phonetic notes as noted:
  • CYBER SONGMAN was recorded with a brand new phonetic script developed personally by the lead developer of the project, Michael Wilson. This new script is an update of CYBER DIVA's, and according to Wilson, tests proved that it was easier to read and pronounce, which increases the clarity in the pronunciation while maintaining a natural, expressive sound.[6]
  • He has 2 additional phonemes "@l" and "4". [7]
  • While other 3rd party English VOCALOIDs have included the "4", CYBER SONGMAN is the first to include "@l".
  • CYBER SONGMAN has some plosives that work differently from most VOCALOIDs, specifically in regards to his unaspirated phonemes ( t, p, k, etc. ) which seem to have notably shorter transitions in vowel-consonant-vowel transitions, and unlike with most English VOCALOIDs, are actually unaspirated in most phoneme combinations. This is a trait even CYBER DIVA doesn't seem to have. This is likely the result of the new recording script as these differences are addressed in CYBER SONGMAN's phoneme dictionary.
  • The American phonetics are generally robotic and glitchy when used for non-English words.[5]
Software issues as noted:
  • His optimum vocal range is focused in lower notes. In consequence, CYBER SONGMAN could present some issues when singing in higher notes as he loses quite a bit of power, even compared to other lower ranged vocals.[8]
