When her provider Lia got married and was due to have a baby she was forced to put her career on hiatus. Because of this, production began on IA as a way to "stand in" as a substitute during the singer's absence. Lia had heard of Hatsune Miku, but was unfamiliar with the VOCALOID software.
1st Place entered production when VOCALOID3 was in place. The company did not want to make IA fit into the existing VOCALOID market, and decided to aim for a separate market instead.
In November 2011, a cover of the song "Tori no Uta", one of Lia's most acclaimed original songs, was released. The cover featured the beta voicebank. On December 14, 2011, two more demos were released, an on the 13th of January, 2012, the full version of the intial beta demo was released via YouTube Broadcast and SoundCloud.
In October 2013, IA's software was announced to have an update for VOCALOID NEO during the promotional period for the IA x SUPER GT CIRCUT BEATS album. The free downloadable version for Windows users wishing to obtain the Mac version was then made available via the IA PROJECT main site on December 7, 2013. Users who previously purchased the Windows version of the voice bank must provide their serial code included with the voice bank in order to download this version, as well as ensure that the Windows version is deactivated before installation onto the Mac operating system.

| She is voiced by a professional singer with her vocals being similar to that of her voice providers' "Crystal-like" voice, making her a more realistic VOCALOID. Lia herself commented in an interview that although IA was based upon her vocal, she can sound so different to her at times.
The licensing for IA is slightly different than past VOCALOIDs, and it is worth taking the time to read this page for more details. Unlike some past VOCALOIDs, users can use her image on CDs, flyers and posters without requesting permission, although some consent from the company is needed for greater use of her image. This is a departure from past VOCALOIDs such as Crypton Future Media, who require you to ask permission for use of their VOCALOIDs' images on things such as CDs, flyers and posters.
