Kagamine Rin & Len (鏡音リン ・レン) is the second product released on December 27, 2007, they are Vocaloid2 Character Vocal Series developed by Crypton Future Media Ltd. (CFM), male voice (Len) and female voice (Rin). Their surname was from the developing code combining Kagami (鏡, mirror) and Ne (音, sound).

Kagamine Rin & Len (鏡音リン・レン), codenamed CV02, are Japanese VOCALOIDs developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and were initially released in December 2007 for the VOCALOID2 engine. They are the second set of vocals for Crypton's Character Vocal Series and are both Character Voice VOCALOIDs. There have since been numerous installments such as additional voice banks dubbed 'Append', an update to the VOCALOID4 engine, and an English vocal.

  +
Their voices are provided by the Japanese voice actress, stage actress, and singer Asami Shimoda (下田麻美 Shimoda Asami).
History
Vocaloid 2
Crypton Future Media intended to project a Vocaloid with low-teen girl's voice at first following Miku Hatsune, but there was a demand for a boy's voice, so Crypton Future Media hired a voice actress who can produce both sounds. Kagamine Rin was the first voicebank developed and introduced to the Vocaloid consumer market on November 8th 2007. However, the package included two voicebanks: one for Rin and another for Len, both provided by the seiyū Asami Shimoda (下田 麻美 Shimoda Asami), Kagamine Len was unveiled later after Kagamine Rin on December 3rd 2007. The package was priced at the same price as Hatsune Miku, even though there was two voicebanks in the box.

As of August 31, 2019, there will be no further installments with the VOCALOID program. Instead Crypton is focusing on their own program, piapro-studio.
At the time of recording in 2007, their names had not yet been decided. Their given names of Rin and Len were said to be based on "<u>ri</u>ght" and "<u>le</u>ft" according to Asami Shimoda. She later confirmed in an interview after the Append release, the name itself was based on the names of Ken and Rin from Hokuto no Ken, the names were derived from a discussion about names that were familiar from her childhood. According to Asami Shimoda, Len's voice was achieved by singing within her chest, while Rin's at the top of her head.

The development of the Kagamines began when Crypton formulated the concept of making a pair of female and male voicebanks. The first idea was for two voices of a girl and an identical male of the opposite gender, just like twins.

Crypton originally had the intention of distributing them as twins, but this was not adopted. Crypton stated that they approved of the many different interpretations of Rin and Len's relationship that they saw in different works. Crypton's final announcement was that the Kagamines were neither siblings nor lovers. During their Append's production, Wataru Sasaki (aka. Wat) described them as two bodies with one soul. Wat also said that the Append boxart makes the pair seem like twins, due to the foetal position they were in.
Act 2
On June 12, 2008, Crypton announced that the updated edition, named "Act2", would be released in early July 2008. Crypton Future Media apologized for the bad quality of the original Kagamine Rin/Len product. They explained that they had rushed the Kagamine product onto the market in suite of Hatsune Miku's success and promised to produce a better quality version to correct their mistake. The product itself had been in production between April and September 2007 and had not been changed between then and their release. The following April they continued to work on the vocals from where they were left off to tweak the issues surrounding them. Crypton Future Media also promised to speak more closely with the fans and keep them up to date more on their Vocaloid software progress in future.

  +
Etymology
The new version was released to address issues with the original voicebanks that affected their ability to sing clearly. The Database was reshuffled around to allow the voicebank libraries to handle the samples better and Crypton Future Media worked heavily to improve the vocals. Act2 was as an independent installation, coexisting with the initial software. During the Kagamine Act2 production, Crypton Future Media also took the time to change the End User agreement on their CV series to make it easier to understand.

When the Kagamines were being recorded in 2007, their names were not yet decided. Their given names of Rin and Len were said to be based on "<u>ri</u>ght" and "<u>le</u>ft" according to Asami Shimoda. She later confirmed in an interview after the Append release that the names were based on Ken and Rin from Fist of the North Star, derived from a discussion about names that were familiar from her childhood.

  +
Their surname was derived from the developing code combining Kagami (鏡, mirror) and Ne (音, sound). This refers to an "echo", which is a sound being bounced back to the user from a different direction caused by soundwaves hitting a surface at a direction that reflects it back the way it came.
Users who had bought the old version got an expansion disc free of charge, this continued until 20th September 2008 after which users could no longer register to receive the Act2 software for free. On June 18, 2008, beta demonstration songs using the new version were released on the company's official blog; and on July 18th, the act2 was released. The original version of the software is now retired from sale by Crypton Future Media themselves and it is now no longer possible to buy the software from them.

KEI was given a concept by Crypton that included Rin and Len's approximate ages as well as the idea of them being 'mirror images' and, like Hatsune Miku, androids. KEI was not given any further direction as he had already drawn the art for Miku, the first release in the Character Vocal Series.

  +
Continuing the tradition of the Item War Internet Meme, many items were proposed for the pair. In the end, Len's item was a banana because his hair was commented to resemble a bunch of them, while Rin's item was an orange since her bow gave the impression of orange leaves. Before her release, Rin had the road roller assigned to her by accident in a video that suddenly received many views on December 1, 2007. Len had yet to be revealed at the time of the road roller meme.
As well as a new set of vocals for the pair KEI took the opportunity to fix art flaws in their artwork.

Rin was the first of the Kagamines to be illustrated and, following Crypton's concept, Len was made to match her. Their leg features were designed to mimic Loudspeaker. The keytar Len is often featured holding in merchandise is a YAMAHA KX5. Their main design, of which is most noticeable on their boots, uses the YAMAHA EOS as a design base.

Also, each Kagamine has a particular Clef symbol associated to their design. Rin has a G-clef (Treble-clef) on her shirt and Len has a F-clef (Bass-clef) on his. In their Append redesigns, they are found on chokers rather than their shirts.
Kagamine Rin's introduction artwork

*Rin has "Act2" on her arm under her "02" tattoo.

*Rin's top was changed in the introductory image between versions around the armpit area. Frills were added to the bottom of her top in Act2

*Her shoulder was not correctly drawn in the original version

*All the yellow bands on her outfit were made bigger on Act2.

*Her fringe was made thicker above the left eye.

*In Kagamine Rin's artwork, her left knee was thicker and her right leg was too short. Kei corrected this in her Act2 version. Her right leg position changed and so did her Left foot position

*Forearms have been shortened in Act2.

*The cyber-on-normal clothing design on their detached sleeves were changed from a green bar to a blue one

Append - the Future of Rin/Len
Append
  +
For their appends, Wat wanted them to have a sense of transparency with their design. In clarification to what he meant by this, he stated the "transparency" was in reference to their hearts. Their append design and the official illustration were made by オサム (osamu).
After Miku Append began, Rin and Len (鏡音リン・レン・アペンド) were confirmed to have appends being worked on. Len Append was in the process of production first and demos of his voice were given out; (high voice demo), (low voice demo). The append was officially released on December 27, 2010. The total number of voicebanks for each one is 6. There are 3 voicebanks being assigned to each Kagamine and had been created from vocal performance of their voice providers.. CFM had an intention to distribute them as twins, but this was not adopted either. After seeing many works that depict their relationships differently, Crypton announced on a magazine interview that those would meet their ideal. ===Marketing===
  +
The Kagamines were marketed as "2 vocals for the price of 1" and were aimed to catch the interest of the growing VOCALOID fandom. Unlike Hatsune Miku, they were not an immediate hit, failing to meet marketing expectations despite receiving the same level of promotion Miku received at the time of their release. After the release of their "Act2" voicebanks, sales picked up steadily and the Kagamines eventually became one of the more heavily marketed VOCALOIDs though have never met the marketing strength Miku gained before them.

Crypton Future Media registered both "Kagamine Rin" and "Kagamine Len" as a trademark on January 29, 2015.
KEI was given the concept Crypton intended, their approximate ages, an image of mirror, and an image of androids, but was not given any other directions when he was asked to illustrate Rin and Len by Crypton, as Kei had already illustrated Miku before. Rin was the first one to be illustrated and Len was made to match her, following Crypton's concept. The Kagamine were released as a more advanced Vocaloid package than Hatsune Miku and contained 2 voicebanks for a male and a female vocal. Since they were sold together as a pair at the same price as Hatsune Miku, the Kagamine package was considered a bargain for producers. Kagamine Rin's vocal is set as the default and users will have to switch to Kagamine Len's vocal manually. After the release of "Act2", the original vocals became referred to as "Act1" by both Crypton Future Media and Vocaloid fans.clr

For users with both versions, they have a choice between four voicebanks overall: the newer voicebanks or the older voicebanks, both with slightly different results. Though an update of the original Kagamine package, this version is still outdated in terms of overall quality and later Vocaloid2 standards. Len remains the weaker of the two voicebanks in terms of ease of use.

During the VOCALOID2 era, the Kagamine package competed with the Megurine Luka package for 2nd place in the top 10 products. Usually, the Kagamine package managed to get the 2nd place spot, pushing Luka to 3rd place.

Their Append outsold the Miku Append package during the period after their release. The Act2 package and Append secured 4th and 5th spot between them in Crypton's end of year top 10 VOCALOID sales despite only being available for a short period of time (mostly owed, but not entirely, to pre-orders). In 2015, the Kagamine V4x package claimed 5th position, while the English bundle version claimed 4th. The sales were based on acquired sales through pre-orders and sales for just 6 days. In January 2016, the bundled version of the update held the 1st place spot on Crypton's ranking, followed by the Japanese package in second.
Unlike the previous Hatsune Miku Append (in regards to her Append; SOFT voicebank), this particular Append has no voicebanks that match the original optimum range and tempo. Thus, it is much harder to escape the need to edit VSQ files that originally fit the Kagamine Rin/Len Act2 vocals. If one complies with using the vocals offered with the Append with the correct Kagamine vocal, they will find that there is a lot less options to expand Rin or Len than what the Miku Append offered (just 3 vocals for each compared to Miku's 6). This makes the Kagamine Appends much harder to use overall, while fitting in with the Kagamine's intention of being a more advance product than the Hatsune Miku vocal was. However, due to the increased contrast in vocals compared to the Miku Append, this particular Append allows the Kagamines to expand out into very different genres, more so than the Miku append offered for Miku.

Overall, Kagamine Rin is the 2nd most popular Crypton VOCALOID, while Len is the 4th. The majority of Japanese producers purchasing their package use Rin, with her having up to half of Len's popularity on top of her own popularity levels. Len can often at times lose his 4th position place to KAITO, if Rin's contributing popularity is not factored in. Rin herself will also at times lose popularity to Megurine Luka, though due to Rin's popularity being boosted by Len, Luka does not always maintain it.
This is a new vocal that Crypton Future Media are planning. This vocal will allow much higher quality results in English than using their Japanese version for English results.

An independent search revealed that most VOCALOIDs had less than 1,000 videos uploaded onto Nico Nico between July 1 and December 15, 2015. The Kagamines, however, managed to gain enough views to not fall into this category. Rin received 2,811 uploads while Len received 2,021. Rin had the 3rd highest total views during this period of any VOCALOID with 5,327,456 views and 477,046 mylists, and Len managed 4,555,580 views and 413,901 mylists. When sorted by average, Len was third with 2254.12 views per video and 204.8 mylists (which was more than Miku’s), and Rin had 1895.22 views per video and 169.71 mylists. However, when the views were based on the more accurate mean total, Len and Rin achieved 355 views/16 mylists and 349 views/16 mylists respectively per video, ranking last among the top 6 VOCALOIDs. ==Trivia==

*It took 25 hours (4 hours a day) to record all the Kagamine Appends.

*Some call Rin and Len by the incorrect names "Lin" and/or "Ren". Though the romanized version of the word could be either, the English version has been confirmed as "Rin and Len" and since there is no dubbed version to contend with, the names remain the only official names in existence for the Vocals. This is also backed up by the origins of their names as "R" (Rin)" and "L" (Len).

**Note; "L" and "R" mean "Left and Right", they are the letters you find on a set of headphones (and sometimes other equipment such as speakers). Usually there is not enough space to write "left" and "right" on headphones. "L" refers to left ear and "R" is right ear.

*On the Mikunopolis website their profile reads the following statement: "The Kagamine twins are well known for their very clear and precise vocals". Considering their history of lack of clarity and/or pronunciation problems, as well as Act 2 of the software missing a pronunciation entirely, this is a little bit of an exaggeration on the webhost's part. Also the statement, "Just with a few tweaks here and there they could sing almost any other genres as well," is also somewhat questionable due to their reputation of requiring previous experience to use and often at times needed more than just a few tweaks to make them work.

*Rin has a G-clef (Treble-clef) on her shirt, and Len has a F-clef (Bass-clef) on his. In their Append redesigns they are found on chokers rather than their shirts.

*With a total of 10 voicebanks, Asami Shimoda is the vocal provider with the most Vocaloid voicebanks for commerical sale based on any single vocaloid provider. This also makes the Kagamine package the most expansive set of vocals within the Vocaloid 2 era and to date the most of any Vocaloid package. However, most new users will only have access to 8 vocals due to the original's retirement.

*Continuing the tradition of the Item War Internet Meme, many items were preposed for the pair. In the end, Len's item was a Banana because his hair was commented to resemble a bunch of bananas, while Rin's item was an Orange since her bow gave the impression of orange leaves. Before her release, Rin had the Road Roller assigned to her by accident in a video that recieved many views suddenly on December 1, 2007. Kagamine Len had yet to be revealed at the time of the Road Roller meme.

*In piano sheet music, the Bass-clef is played with the left hand, while the Treble-clef is played with the right hand. It is believed that this is used for Rin and Len's names (Right for Rin and Left for Len). There is also a Treble-clef on Rin's shirt and a Bass-clef on Len's shirt.

Kagamine Rin & Len VOCALOID2 act2 Append VOCALOID4 English | Piapro Studio | Songs Albums Notable Originals

Their voices are provided by the Japanese voice actress, stage actress, and singer Asami Shimoda (下田麻美 Shimoda Asami).

As of August 31, 2019, there will be no further installments with the VOCALOID program. Instead Crypton is focusing on their own program, Piapro Studio.[1][2]

Concept

The development of the Kagamines began when Crypton formulated the concept of making a pair of female and male voicebanks. The first idea was for two voices of a girl and an identical male of the opposite gender, just like twins.[3]

Crypton originally had the intention of distributing them as twins, but this was not adopted. Crypton stated that they approved of the many different interpretations of Rin and Len's relationship that they saw in different works. Crypton's final announcement was that the Kagamines were neither siblings nor lovers.[4][5] During their Append's production, Wataru Sasaki (aka. Wat) described them as two bodies with one soul.[6] Wat also said that the Append boxart makes the pair seem like twins,[7] due to the foetal position they were in.[8]

Etymology

When the Kagamines were being recorded in 2007, their names were not yet decided. Their given names of Rin and Len were said to be based on "right" and "left" according to Asami Shimoda. She later confirmed in an interview after the Append release that the names were based on Ken and Rin from Hokuto no Ken, derived from a discussion about names that were familiar from her childhood.

Their surname was derived from the developing code combining Kagami (鏡, mirror) and Ne (音, sound). This refers to an "echo", which is a sound being bounced back to the user from a different direction caused by soundwaves hitting a surface at a direction that reflects it back the way it came.[9]

Their codename "CV02" means "Character Voice 02".

Appearance

KEI was given a concept by Crypton that included Rin and Len's approximate ages as well as the idea of them being 'mirror images' and, like Hatsune Miku, androids. KEI was not given any further direction as he had already drawn the art for Miku, the first release in the Character Vocal Series.

Len had yet to be revealed at the time of the road roller meme.[10]

Rin was the first of the Kagamines to be illustrated and, following Crypton's concept, Len was made to match her. Their leg features were designed to mimic speakers.[11][12] The keytar Len is often featured holding in merchandise is a YAMAHA KX5. Their main design, of which is most noticeable on their boots, uses the YAMAHA EOS as a design base.

Also, each Kagamine has a particular musical clef symbol associated to their design. Rin has a G-clef (Treble-clef) on her shirt and Len has a F-clef (Bass-clef) on his. In their Append redesigns, they are found on chokers rather than their shirts.

When Rin and Len received a new set of vocals during their Act2 release, KEI took the opportunity to fix flaws in the original artwork.

Act2

  • Rin has "Act2" under her "02" arm tattoo. While Len now has "Act 2" on his headphones.
  • The top was changed around the armpit area, frills were added to the bottom of her top in Act2.
  • The shoulder position was corrected from the original design.
  • All of the yellow bands on her outfit were made thicker.
  • The fringe was made thicker above the left eye. And Len's fringe was reshaped and other strands were adjusted.
  • Len's face, particularly around the cheekbones, were reshaped.
  • The leg position was corrected; the original's left knee was wider and the right leg was too short. KEI corrected the "Act2" version by changing the positions of the foot. While Len's left knee had a minor tweak.
  • Forearms were shortened.
  • The interface design on the detached sleeves were changed from green bar to a blue bar.

Append

For their appends, Wat wanted them to have a sense of transparency with their design.[13] In clarification to what he meant by this, he stated the "transparency" was in reference to their hearts.[14] Their append design and the official illustration were made by オサム (osamu).

For the V4x and V4 English designs, Rin was given a more silver/whiter look to make her appearance more refreshing.[15] The design was also based more on the EOS B700 rather than the Kx5 because of its more whiter appearance.[16] In addition, more synthesizer-based music symbols were used.[17]

History

Marketing

The Kagamines were marketed as "2 vocals for the price of 1" and were aimed to catch the interest of the growing VOCALOID fandom. Unlike Hatsune Miku, they were not an immediate hit, failing to meet marketing expectations despite receiving the same level of promotion Miku received at the time of their release. After the release of their "Act2" voicebanks, sales picked up steadily and the Kagamines eventually became one of the more heavily marketed VOCALOIDs though have never met the marketing strength Miku gained before them.

Crypton Future Media registered both "Kagamine Rin" and "Kagamine Len" as a trademark on January 29, 2015.[18][19]

On July 30, 2021 at the "Hatsune Miku Chronicle" (初音ミク・クロニクル) art exhibition event, merchandise featuring Kagamine Rin & Len's original concept artwork now known as Kagamine Rin & Len if. (鏡音リン・レン if) were revealed with a finalized illustration of the original design by KEI.[20][21]

Voicebanks

The following covers the VOCALOID software, for future releases see Piapro Studio releases.

Kagamine Rin - Power
Kagamine Rin was designed to be a deeper tone teenage vocal compared to Hatsune Miku. She was meant to have tension to her vocal and was a "power" type vocal. The Kagamine Rin vocal, now known as "Power", has undergone dramatic overhauls over time due to quality issues and consequential versions have sounded different to past versions. The voice is voice acted and is an amateur singer.
Kagamine Rin - Warm
Designed to fit a more acoustic sounding song, this is a version of the voice with more warmth, focusing on the lower tones of the vocal range resulting in duller highs but more depth in lows.
  • Kagamine Rin & Len Append (VOCALOID2), December 27, 2010
  • Kagamine Rin & Len V4X (VOCALOID4, Piapro Studio2), December 24, 2015
Kagamine Rin - Sweet
A more cute sounding version of the voice of Rin with a sweeter tone.
  • Kagamine Rin & Len Append (VOCALOID2), December 27, 2010
  • Kagamine Rin & Len V4X (VOCALOID4, Piapro Studio2), December 24, 2015
Kagamine Rin - English
The English version of the Kagamine Rin vocal.
Kagamine Len - Power
Similar to Kagamine Rin "Power", the vocal is a "power" type vocal and is meant to have tension in the vocal. The vocal is meant to sound boyish, like a young masculine vocal. The vocal has undergone dramatic overhauls over time due to quality issues and some consequential versions are quite different to others, even compared to the Kagamine Rin "Power" vocal. The voice is of a voice acted result and represents an amateur singer.
  • Kagamine Rin & Len (VOCALOID2), December 27, 2007
  • Kagamine Rin & Len act2 (VOCALOID2), July 18, 2008
  • Kagamine Rin & Len Append (VOCALOID2), December 27, 2010
  • Kagamine Rin & Len V4X (VOCALOID4, Piapro Studio2), December 24, 2015
Kagamine Len - Cold
The Kagamine Len "Cold" vocal is the opposite of the Kagamine Rin "Warm" vocal and is designed to sound moodier, with more focus on the highs. The result is fuller high sounds but the lower sounds are less attractive.
  • Kagamine Rin & Len Append (VOCALOID2), December 27, 2010
  • Kagamine Rin & Len V4X (VOCALOID4, Piapro Studio2), December 24, 2015
Kagamine Len - Serious
Serious is a vocal that is designed to be the opposite of Kagamine Rin's "Sweet" voicebank. It is quite emotional sounding compared to "Cold".
  • Kagamine Rin & Len Append (VOCALOID2), December 27, 2010
  • Kagamine Rin & Len V4X (VOCALOID4, Piapro Studio2), December 24, 2015

Sales

Initially, it was reported that their package sold 20,000 units. This was half the amount that the Hatsune Miku product before them sold.[22]

The Act2 package and Append secured 4th and 5th spot between them in Crypton's end of year top 10 VOCALOID sales despite only being available for a short period of time (mostly owed, but not entirely, to pre-orders).[23][24][25] However, in June 2011, their Append had fallen to 8th place, one place below KAITO's VOCALOID voicebank.

During 2013, when both KAITO V3 and Hatsune Miku V3 were released, the charts were disrupted. When the charts resumed some form of order, the Kagamines were left in the 5th or 6th spot, leaving them overall more popular than Luka by MEIKO V3's release in 2014. Their Append had not been sighted for months and was by now completely off the charts. After MEIKO's V3 release, they disappeared from the charts, leaving them as the only Character Vocal Series member with no products in the charts. By mid-2014, they, along with the VOCALOID2 Megurine Luka package, would only make temporary appearances in the charts, but no longer held any form of constant ranking.

In 2014, Crypton's download store, Sonicwire, reported that the Kagamine Append package was the 8th most sold VOCALOID package on the store, while their Act2 product claimed 5th place.[26] In 2015, the Kagamine V4x package claimed 5th position, while the English bundle version claimed 4th. The sales were based on acquired sales through pre-orders and sales for just 6 days.[27] In January 2016, the bundled version of the update held the 1st place spot on Crypton's ranking, followed by the Japanese package in second.

Reaction

The Kagamines were slow to gain popularity in the Japanese fandom after the backlash from their original voicebanks. In later years, although they gained the second-highest number of songs, they were not as popular as Hatsune Miku.

In the Japanese fandom, Rin is the more popular of the two, with more related works than Len.

By the time of their V4x release, the duo had over 100 hit songs between them.[28]

Impact

Because of KAITO's failure, male voicebanks had little demand at the time of the Kagamines' release. Len's voicebank was the only male VOCALOID2 vocal until Camui Gackpo's release.[29]

Their designs spawned many producer-based derivatives.

Misc

However, the Kagamine software was the only VOCALOID package to be in all top 6 lists besides GUMI.[30]

In February 2014, Vocaloid Otaku user "Dessert>desert" decided to run a test to see how many illegal VOCALOID downloads were made via torrent. The Kagamine package was ranked the 3rd most popular illegal of the singular package downloads with 4,777 downloads. They were beaten by MAYU at 11,404 and VY2v3 at 12,434 downloads.[31]

In 2015, a survey showed that Kagamine Rin was the 3rd most popular VOCALOID in 2014 on Nico Video while Kagamine Len was the 6th most popular.[32]

Trivia
  • It took 25 hours (4 hours a day) to record all the Kagamine Appends.[33]
  • Some call Rin and Len by the incorrect names "Lin" and/or "Ren". Though the romanized version of the words could be either, the English version was confirmed as "Rin and Len". Since there is no dubbed version to contend with, the names remain the only official names in existence for the vocals. This is also backed up by the origins of their names as "R" (Rin)" and "L" (Len).
    • Note; "L" and "R" mean "Left and Right". They are the letters you find on a set of headphones (and sometimes other equipment such as speakers). Usually, there is not enough space to write "left" and "right" on headphones. "L" refers to left ear and "R" is right ear.
  • A total of 10 voicebanks makes the Kagamine package the most expansive set of vocals within the VOCALOID2 era. They are currently 3rd in the total number of vocals released behind Miku (with 15 vocals) in second and GUMI (with 17) in first.
Achievements
  • First dual voicebanks released with two "VOCALOIDs" in one package
  • Only dual voicebanks released for VOCALOID2
  • First male (Len) released for VOCALOID2
  • First VOCALOIDs to be updated
  • First vocal (Len) released not to be the same gender as the provider
  • First male (Len) to be Appended
