Since 2004, several concerts or live performances have taken place using VOCALOID software. Concerts today feature a VOCALOID vocalist projected onto a screen to make it seem like they are there in person. On the stage with them is a live band as well as back-up dancers in some cases.
Hatsune Miku performed her first "live" concert like a virtual idol on a projection screen during Animelo Summer Live at the Saitama Super Arena on August 22, 2009. She sang Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru♪ and Black★Rock Shooter. She was accompanied by Asami Shimoda, and the character Black★Rock Shooter.[1][2][3]
At the "Miku FES'09 (Summer)" event on August 31, 2009, Miku's image was screened by rear projection on a mostly-transparent screen.[4]

Miku also performed her first overseas live concert on November 21, 2009, during Anime Festival Asia (AFA) in Singapore. She sang "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru♪", Koisuru Voc@loid, and (The) World is Mine.[5][6]
On March 9, 2010, Miku's first solo live performance titled "Miku no Hi Kanshasai 39's Giving Day" was opened at the Zepp Tokyo in Odaiba, Tokyo. The concert was performed as part of promotions for Sega's Hatsune Miku -Project DIVA- video game in March 2010.[7][8][9]
GUMI and Gackpo made special appearances in the 2010 new year celebration event known as King Run Anison Red and White.The songs they covered were; アニソン紅白2010 M-32[Love Letter]神威がくぽ(がくっぽいど) "Love Letter" covered by Gackpo originally from "Mobile Suit Z Gundam", which had originally been sung by Gackt and アニソン紅白2010 M-33[星間飛行]GUMI(メグッポイド) "Interstellar Flight" covered by GUMI from "Macross Frontier", which had originally been sung by Megumi Nakajima. Their appearance was, at the time, supposed to be a one off event.[10]

The events leading up to this concert tie into Hatsune Miku being used to advertise the Toyota Corolla Campaign. In addition to her live concert, Miku was Anime Expo’s first "Virtual Guest of Honor". On the 26th of May, all 3,500 tickets sold out, making Miku the first performer to sell out such a number compared to the singers booked for the month.

Following the success of the Sapporo concert, various screenings of the said concert took place at many cities in the US, England, Thailand, Brazil and France in theaters showcasing the Sapporo concert on different dates, with a special concert in Singapore taking place on November 11. This was done as part of promoting the DVD and Blu-ray releases of the Tokyo and Sapporo concerts.[15][16]
Vocafarre was a large VOCALOID event that Yamaha organized to promote the VOCALOID 3 software. It was livestreamed via Nico Nico Douga. It was labelled "No.0". The event covered announcements for upcoming Vocaloid voicebanks and updates on Vocaloids. GUMI, Akikoloid-chan, VY1v3, Tone Rion and Aoki Lapis also appeared in concert together in Japan, dancing on stage. Though other concerts had been done for Vocaloid, this was the first official "3D" concert. Previously, all concerts had been done with 2D technology. This concert allowed Vocaloids to dance with real life dancers on stage for the first time.[17][18]
"Hatsune Miku Live Party 2012 (Mikupa)" and "Miku no Hi Dai Kanshasai 39's Giving Day" were held on March 9 and featured the graphics of the MikuPa concerts and the -Project DIVA- Arcade graphics, respectively. The events took place at Tokyo Dome City Hall.[19]
SeeU appeared on stage for the first time. She was part of a Korean music show called "인기가요 (Inkigayo)" singing with GLAM, a Korean music group (Dahee Kim, one of the members, is the voice provider for SeeU). The event was produced and broadcasted by SBS. SeeU's animation was made by Tourbox.[22]

This Megpoid English launch event took place at NEW PEOPLE, San Francisco. The all-day event commenced at 12:00 noon, and offered a variety of dance and VOCALOID performances, free Megpoid VOCALOID software workshops, demos, and other activities that ran to 6:00 PM.[36]
This was the fourth year in a row a VOCALOID concert took place on March 9. The event, titled "初音ミク ライブパーティー 2013 in Kansai(ミクパ♪) (Hatsune Miku Live Party 2013 in Kansai (MikuPa♪) -39's Spring the 3rd Synthesis-", was held in the Wakayama Prefecture, in Kansai, at the Wakayama Big Whale. HATSUNE MIKU EXPO 2014 in Indonesia was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, and was the first time that Miku had performed in Indonesia. The event included 3 live shows and an exhibition that included cosplay and a full scale, winged Miku figure. The exhibition also showcased a Snow Miku 2014 Nendoroid and several other figures. Although the event was not released as a Blu-ray disc, its live audio recordings and concert screening are available on KARENT and Crunchyroll.[53][54][55]
