Luo Tianyi VOCALOID3 Japanese

Luo Tianyi (洛 天依) is a Chinese VOCALOID developed and distributed by Bplats, Inc., under the YAMAHA Corporation, and was created in collaboration with Shanghai He Nian. She was released in July 2012 for the VOCALOID3 engine.

Tianyi is the grand winning entry of the "VOCALOID™ CHINA" contest, held for choosing the design of the first Chinese VOCALOID. Her voice is provided by a Chinese female voice actress, Shan Xin (山新 / 王 宥霁; Wáng Yòu Jì), who is able to speak Chinese and Japanese.

ConceptEdit

According to her short anime series, Luo Tianyi is an angel who came to earth with a mission to spread music to the world. Tianyi can detect "the song of your heart"(心中的歌声) of a person. The "Song" can be interpreted as the strongest emotion a person has at the moment, or a melody that represents them. Even if the person cannot express the melody themselves, Tianyi can still hear it and sing it.

Her personality is a bit introvert, but she is still the type of girl who has a lot of empathy and does not give up easily. She admires the VOCALOIDs from the past, and dreams of the day she can do just the same as them – using songs to bring happiness to the world. While she cannot communicate with humans due to the language barrier between humans and VOCALOIDs, she is very sensitive to others' emotions and can use songs to express her own emotions and thoughts.

Her special skill is "Resonate" (共鸣).

EtymologyEdit

Her original name was Yayin Gongyu (雅音宫羽), however, this was dropped because it was written in a Japanese naming style rather than Chinese.

The name (pinyin: Luò Tiān-Yī) Luo may come from the last name of a goddess (Luoshen, 洛神) that appeared in ancient Chinese legends. The goddess plays instruments and is considered to be one of the goddesses of music in China. Tian (天) may come from Tianlai (天籁), which means "sounds from nature", which is used in China to describe the most beautiful voices. Yi(依) is short for Yiren (伊人), which means "fair lady" in ancient Chinese.

AppearanceEdit

The design was originally drawn by MOTH, but was refined and redrawn by illustrator Ideolo.

MarketingEdit

Luo Tianyi was a fan-designed VOCALOID, created with the VOCALOID fans in mind. This concept is shared with VOCALOIDs such as Ring Suzune and Lui Hibiki.

VOCALOID CHINA PROJECT released an animated 30 second preview of the first PV featuring Luo Tianyi. Production was handled by Seven Stone studio.

Luofigurine

Tianyi's figurine that was in the deluxe version of her voicebank.

Figurines

A figurine of Tianyi appeared in the YAMAHA VOCALOID shop as part of her promotion. It was issued with the Deluxe version of her software. It is also available on Taobao. A second smaller figurine has also appeared since.

A plush of her fairy friend, Tian Dian, had also appeared. It is sold through Taobao and can be purchased and shipped worldwide.

Merchandise

A large umbrella was created as a promotional item for Luo Tianyi's release, and features all of the members of VOCALOID CHINA (with the exception of YANHE, this was prior to her release).

Another product was a mug simply featuring a picture of Tianyi, and is purchasable from Taobao.

Animation

Main article: VOCANESE Animation

Tianyi was the first VOCALOID to be featured in her own animation series. The series was released as a 5 part PV set. On May 15th at CFO3, the full first PV was made available.

Clothing

T-shirts were created based on Luo Tianyi with three variations. They're still currently being sold, continuing to promote her release. Two have pictures with Tianyi's head on them, one with various expressions on it, and another simply saying "VOCALOID CHINA" on it with a large "V" along the side. They are currently only purchasable in China online.

Game

Luo Tianyi has her own game known as VOCANOVA[1], which is available as an app for the iPad. There is currently a lite version of the game in the iTunes App store [2]. However, VOCANOVA is currently available to the China iTunes App Store only, and is not purchasable or downloadable in any other iTunes stores worldwide.

Conference

Either prior to or shortly after Luo Tianyi's release, there was a sort of convention and conference held for fans of the Chinese VOCALOID. The convention took place on a college campus, where students and anime fans alike interested in learning more about her came to be educated on what exactly she was, and how to use her. Visitors and participants also had the opportunity to test out a beta version of VOCANOVA during the visit. The convention was overall a form of promotional advertisement aimed at gaining a larger following in the Chinese fandom.

A second conference/convention was held on December 13, 2013, which was also held on a college campus. This conference was also a form of promotional advertisement, however it also included information on VOCALOID Yan He. According to Taobao, tickets could be purchased at 0.10 yuan. Apparently the convention also held information about upcoming Chinese video games and other anime related subjects not related to Luo Tianyi or VOCALOID CHINA.

AR App

A limited Luo Tianyi AR App has been released by VOCANESE.[3] The AR card and application could be obtained through the VOCANESE website. After pointing the camera to the card, a 3D Luo Tianyi figure will dance on the mobile phone.[4]

PopularityEdit

Luo Tianyi Popularity
Sales
Reaction
Luo Tianyi became popular in China, as there is a large fandom in the country. However, in the West, she is not noticed as much, where many videos carry less than 5,000 views on YouTube. In Japan, Tianyi was received relatively well, but her videos on Niconico Douga still do not receive many views. Although she is Chinese, which often suffers from issues of racism between it and countries like Japan and South Korea; there was very little racial backlash towards Tianyi, compared to SeeU's Japanese backlash. Even though Tianyi was accepted, she does not receive much notice in Japan.

In 2013, Tianyi had a large peak in popularity around February with the Chinese New Year. She was more popular than YANHE, but did not receive many videos.[5]
