History[]

Involvement in Plan B[]

In October 2012, this vocal first appeared during the involvement of a collaboration between Voctro Labs, Ballantine's, theFACT™ and the Spanish rock band La Oreja de Van Gogh, where the people could help to create the lyrics for the famous group.[1] Voctro Labs provided the tools that allowed the participants to listen to their written lyrics sung by the voice through the official website. It was revealed this voice was a new VOCALOID that was being developed by the company and was based on Leire Martinez, the main singer of the band. Although Voctro Labs would later clarify in response to a fan's question that Martinez was not the provider behind the Vocaloid.[2]

In answer to fan's curiosity as to whether the voice would be sold, the company announced they were planning on releasing the voice to the public. She had no official release date, but on October 28, 2013, Voctro Labs announced that she would be released before Christmas.[3] Later, on November 27, Voctro Labs announced that her release date was December 18, 2013. They also announced that they were still improving the voicebank and adding "some surprises" to the vocals.[4]

Illustration Contest[]

A contest was held to look for an illustrator who would draw a design for the VOCALOID. Voctro Labs requested that those interested should send a sample of their work to the company's email and the deadline for this was July 8, 2013. After they reviewed the works of all of their entrants, they picked the potential candidates. Over 200 entries were received. The chosen artists had until July 15 to enter a design for Voctro Labs. They were asked to draw a 'pop star' and were given samples of the voice as reference.

The results were revealed on July 24. The winner was Noriko Hayashi, an artist who also happened to be a runner-up in PowerFX Systems AB. and VocaTone's YOHIOloid design contest. At the announcement, Voctro Labs revealed a silhouette of the design.[5]

On December 12, it was announced that MAIKA would have a VOCALOID NEO to become compatable with Mac.[6]

Package details as noted:

According to her site, MAIKA has a powerful feminine voice and a large phonetic flexibility.

Two special Job Plug-ins were also developed for MAIKA which can be downloaded from VOCTRO Labs. The first converts Japanese VSQx files into the closet equivalent in Spanish phonetics, the second does the same for English.[7] The plug-in for Japanese is different to the one used by Bruno and Clara and takes into account her expanded phonetic data, allowing more accurate results then the Bruno and Clara version.

The demo VSQx file "Que Decida el Corazón" can also be downloaded from their website.

Vocal traits as noted:
  • In the lower registers she has a softer, more airy voice, while in the higher registers she has a more intense timbre.
  • She has a broad pitch range, which switches from a chest voice to a head voice in the highest registers.
  • Her voice is suited for a large range of musical genres and styles.[8]
  • Similar to Clara, her voice has a good flexibility in terms of pitch and voice timbre, standing well the change of GEN or filters that alter the voice.
  • She has 33 breath samples that can be accessed within Vocaloid, this is more then Bruno and Clara had combined.
Phonetic notes as noted:
  • Instead of the normal Spanish VOCALOID vocal library database, MAIKA had an customized phoneme expansion.[9] It contained 16 additional phonemes. Although they're intended mainly for Catalan, Voctro Labs suggested that with her added phonemes she would be able to achieve a decent imitation of other languages like English, Portuguese and Japanese - although disclaimed that she would not sound like a native speaker.[10]
  • Various of her consonant can be reproduced alone across extended notes without a vowel. The fricatives [f], [s], [S], [x]; the nasals [n], [m], [J]; and liquid [l] stand well this, allowing use them in a syllabic way. Other phonemes like the [rr] can be reproduced alone as well, but suffer heavy distortion when they are without an adject note.
  • In their raw state, MAIKA's [x], [s] and [S] phonemes are strong and louder compared to any other phoneme in the library, and needs proper tuning to avoid the pronunciation issue.
Software issues as noted:
  • When using her language conversion plug-ins, it is important to go over the results afterwards. The process is not perfect and further editing may be needed especially as experienced users may discover better combinations on occasion.
