Mew (ミウ) is a Japanese VOCALOID developed and distributed by the YAMAHA Corporation, and was released in October 2011 for the VOCALOID3 engine. Her voice is provided by Japanese female singer Miu Sakamoto (坂本美雨; Sakamoto Miu)

Concept

Etymology

Her name is based on her voice provider's name, Japanese singer, Miu Sakamoto, and an onomatopoeia for the sound a kitten makes.[1]

Appearance

Mew is depicted in an aesthetic monochrome style. As her name suggests, her design is cat-themed.

She has a tattoo that shows her name written phonetically. The way in which it's written (with an [uː] and that it features the supra-segmental for long vowel) suggests it used an English phonetic notation. This is something unusual, as Mew is a Japanese voicebank.

The cat on the boxart was modeled after Miu Sakamoto's own cat Savami.

Mew's voice provider was the subject of several interviews before the VOCALOID's release, and received more attention than VOCALOIDs such as VY1 and VY2.

In Japan, for the most part, her vocals have been positively received, though few producers are currently using her. She is the second least popular VOCALOID3 release for 2011, first being Tone Rion.
