Old poll to save results.
I remember seeing a poll like this years ago when I was like 10, and I voted for V2. But now I say V3 because I'm starting to see a lot of new types and new languages :)
V1 all the way! Not because of the voices, but because V1 has the best interface (compared to V3). If only I could get V3 with a V1 interface...
V3. I've got a soft spot for V2 and I sorta miss when there weren't tons of vocals, but V3 I feel is the most diverse, and has really good vocal quality.
V3 so far has been the best generation but I have high hopes for V4. Hopefully we'll see many new characters and languages! (^ω^)
updated the poll, I left the older one as well for the moment due to the high number of results.
Vocaloid Companies are so worried about updating their Vocaloids ;_; It's gonna be too funny when VOCALOID3 voice banks are retired ._.
The original VOCALOID series is honestly my favourite. They brought a phenomenal music revolution that only became appreciated once the little teal thing came along. The best part was that they were all so unique. They all filled a niche. KAITO and MEIKO were, at one point, very mature vocals. They had a really wide range that people could work with and unfortunately, their V3 updates weren't so kind to them in this aspect. MEIKO and KAITO V3 lost vocal range, gained some clarity in certain spots, but the engine just made them extremely nasally which really put me off. ・ヘ・
LEON and LOLA, the father and mother of all VOCALOIDs... where do I begin with these two...? Ah yes, they were indeed rushed, suffer from horrible engine noise, and require a lot of work... but to be fair, they were the very first two voices. They brought a mature, unique voice I'd never heard in an English voicebank to the table... It's hard to describe, but they are far different from the current standing of generic voices (Ruby, Cryptonloid's with their English).
And lastly, the lovely MIRIAM... She is honestly my favourite from the V1 series. She has this unusual voice that I wish we had a little more of nowadays. Sure, Zero-G has confirmed a female vocal (presumeably British-English), but I don't think it's possible for them to ever do better than their first 3.
@arc, actually Meiko and Kaito didn't loose any range at all. From what I remember, the V1 vocals had only something like a single octave ranges worth of data. What made them seem like they had more was how much "give" the engine had.
Its pure myth they have smaller ranges then the V1 and I'm disappointed people still quote it. In actual fact, they have larger ranges now then they did then. However, the V3 engine had more realism thanks to the way it worked, this added a lot more restrictions then many realize because you can hear more clearly when Kaito or Meiko screw up. So the "give" in the voices no longer exists.
Also, the data gathered for V1 was meant to be analytic centre, which didn't produce as accurate results as one which put samples at the centre of the building of the vocal. Later updates did make V1 use the data as samples and not analytics, the result was it worked more like V2 and beyond, but the results were still quite crappy as V1 still had to improvise a lot. Those who used the last versio of V1 and the original version would have seen quite a result difference.

Well, I messed around with V1 K&M along with their V3 counterparts (friend came over and let me compare them) and KAITO can't hit lower notes like he used to. He sounds way too soft.
Again this is the engine, not the voice, Kaito's always had a different sound on his lower range as to his higher. Its kinda what made Kaito the best overall V1 (in my opinion) since he was the most compactiable voice with the crude V1 engine.
Actually, saying that... I don't think people realize the beauty of V1 compared to later engines... It doesn't get near enough the credit it should do, despite its primitive results. Hearing the V3 updates, this is why Wat said their almost like brothers, rather then the same voice. V1 and V3 just don't sound nor work the same way... Makes me wish there was a way to make post V2 voices work exactly as V1 did when you want that effect. :-(
Its likely you'd get a pure Kaito V1 mark.2 voice with the V3 version.
