My thoughts on reprints

Reprints... we all use them, admit it. Some Vocaloid fans seem to be downright adamant about using them, though. Is reprinting a legitimate practice? Is it morally right? I've been up to my neck in Vocaloid for the past year now, so I've been able to form some personal opinions.

First of all, if a producer does not upload a song at all to YouTube, I see no problem with reprinting it. If it's already free to listen to on Nico, then why not YouTube? However, if a song *does* have an official YouTube upload, then reprinting the song is definitely a no-no. Unfortunately, many people think that Nico is still the only place where the Ps hang out, and thus believe that everything is theirs to reprint. Bad idea. Rerulili, Mitchie M, DECO*27, Hachi,…

My relationship with song derivatives

Song derivatives are so fun. Covers, choruses, PVs, dances, parodies, remixes, piano arrangements! The community aspect is one of the things that makes the Vocaloid fandom wonderful. However, derivatives are scary.

What? How are they scary?

Well, I've been doing a bunch of song pages lately, and it's something I enjoy. Kinda. Well, not really, but it's nice to know that my favorite songs have pages here, and I also enjoy learning more about them. As I'm sure everyone has noticed, I'm a perfectionist, so it's physically and emotionally impossible for me to make a song page with just an infobox and lyrics. We must have albums listings! Song meanings! VocaRan info! As many external links as can be hunted down! Game appearance links! And, oh yea…

Developing background sections in song articles

I've noticed that we've been getting a plethora here that have nicely developed lyric sections and good song boxes, but very bare (if even existent) background sections. This is definitely something we as a community need to work on.

You may think writing a background section is labor-intensive and boring, but in my experience it's way easier than the lyrics. You don't need to write a 1,000-word essay on the song plot or have a PhD in English. Simply touch up on the important points, and delve deeper if you have the time and/or enthusiasm.

I'm going to show you how I write background sections. It's only my method, and it certainly isn't the only way of doing it, but I thought it might be nice to share.

First of all, it's best to begin with a …

Concerning YouTube links...

YouTube, that great wilderness of videos. Hundreds of thousands of videos, covering every topic imaginable. Owned by Google, it has become the most popular media hosts on the planet, in multiple languages and catering to every demographic.

Historically (well, six years ago), Nico Nico was the place for Vocaloid. It's where all the big-name producers got their start, and even today it remains to premiere website for VOCALOID music. This is logical, as it caters largely to the otaku culture.

Anyway, back in the day, YouTube was simply a place for reprints, perhaps subbed, perhaps not. Almost everything was copied from Nico Nico. However, since then, Vocaloid's western fandom has grown, and the producers are starting to realize how valuable their…
