VY1 VOCALOID2 VOCALOID3 eVocaloid VOCALOID4

This is an article about the VY1v4 software for the VOCALOID4 engine.

HistoryEdit

On November 20, 2014, VOCALOID4 was officially announced through a livestream, in which several companies appeared announcing their upcoming updated VOCALOIDs. VY1v4 was one of these VOCALOIDs revamped for the new engine.

Its voicebank was used to showcase the new features and capabilities of the VOCALOID4 engine. It was revealed that VY1v4 also contained four voicebanks: Normal, Power, Natural, and Soft.

VOCALOID4 and VY1v4 became available on December 17, 2014, making it the first voice to be released for the engine.[1]

Shortly prior to VY1v4's release, the YouTube demo uploads of iNSaNiTY and COSMONAUTS were set to private due to YAMAHA's request. They were once again made public after VY1v4 was released.

Individual VocalsEdit

Product Information
Optimum
  Tempo: 60 ~ 200BPM  Range: B2 ~ A3
Package details
"NORMAL" is the in-between vocal for "soft" and "power", acting as a bridge in tone. It is a supporting voice to the "natural" vocal and is best as a back up, or for XSY.
Vocal traits as noted:
  • Focuses on the mid-range of the VY1 vocal
  • It is closest overall vocal of the 3 to "Natural" in sound.
  • It is focused on the mid-tone range an acts as a bright between "power" and "soft" without resulting to use the "natural" vocal.
  • As its name "normal" implies, this is the most "neutral" of the 3 additional vocals. When used for XSY as a second vocal, it will provide a more subtle change compared to "soft" or "power".
Software issues as noted:
  • It has only 1/3 of the range that the "natural" vocal has.
  • Compared to "power" and "soft", this vocal doesn't offer such a dramatic change to the "natural" vocal. It is best used in conjunction with "power" and "soft" and often best used as the primarily vocal.

Product Information
Optimum
  Tempo: 60 ~ 200BPM  Range: F2 ~ E3
Package details
"SOFT", as the vocal's name suggests, is a voice with a softer tone compared to the original VY1v4 voicebank. It is a supporting voice to the "natural" vocal and is best as a back up, or for XSY.
Vocal traits as noted:
  • Focuses on the bass range of the VY1 vocal.
  • This vocal has a soft tone which allows it to go low and sound moody.
  • When used for XSY as a second vocal, it will soften the other vocals, removing strength. This adds to the expressiveness achievable.
Software issues as noted:
  • It has only 1/3 of the range that the "natural" vocal has.
  • Its not always best to use XSY with "power" since the two vocals have little overlap between them. This causes the Vocaloid engine to have to improvise more, and can produce lower quality results.

Product Information
Optimum
  Tempo: 60 ~ 200BPM  Range: F3 ~ D4
Package details
"POWER", as the vocal's name suggests, is a more powerful version of the original VY1v4 voicebank. It is a supporting voice to the "natural" vocal and is best used as a back up, or for XSY.
Vocal traits as noted:
  • Focuses on the treble range of the VY1 voice.
  • Has a strong tone which allows it to go into high notes without waning, giving the treble range the capability to hold notes well.
  • When used for XSY as a second vocal, it adds strength, enhancing the force behind each note. This allows the VY1v4 voice in question to have some lift on its upper range.
Software issues as noted:
  • It has only 1/3 of the range that the "natural" vocal has.
  • Its not always best to use XSY with "soft" since the two vocals have little overlap between them. This causes the Vocaloid engine to have to improvise more, and can produce lower quality results.

Product Information
Optimum
  Tempo: 60 ~ 200BPM  Range: D2 ~ F4
Package details
This is a vocal designed to have a "NATURAL" tone. It is the main singing voice of the VY1v4 package and is an update upon the standard "VY1" vocal which was first released for VOCALOID2.
Vocal traits as noted:
  • Is overall more realistic then the other three vocals. It is the closest voice within the package to the past VY1 and VY1v3 vocals.
  • It has the largest optimum range within the package, over double the size of either "normal", "power" or "soft".
  • The vocal is less genre focused compared to the other voicebanks, meaning that it can be used for more genres of music with greater flexibility.
  • The overall tempo and optimum range is slightly bigger than the VY1v3 vocal, meaning it can cover a larger variety of songs compared to the past VY1 and VY1v3 vocals.
  • In regards to XSY;
    • When used with the XSY feature as the core vocal, it will take on the properties of "soft", "power" and "normal", maintaining a large vocal range while enhancing any of the areas the other three vocals specialize in.
    • When used with the XSY feature as a second vocal, it will extend the vocal range of the three vocals and add a natural tone to them, making them sound more human-esque.
  • Since it covers the range of "normal", "soft" and "power", it can also act as a bridge between the vocals.
Software issues as noted:
  • Compared to the other three vocals in this package, it lacks focus in any particular direction.
